There is a deep sorrow in my soul at the loss of my sister Virginia.
She was the sixth child of seven, and I was the seventh. My mother was insistent that her family be close in caring and loving one another as siblings, which meant Gin and I would spend a lot of time together through our childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.
We were as different as night and day, but there was a beauty and humor in her that was unmatched. She was intelligent, and though she disdained traditional learning, she could talk about any subject and would investigate and navigate areas of interest to develop her own views and perceptions. She could talk for hours, and when topics were of shared interest, I could listen for the duration because I enjoyed hearing her take on issues and life in general. She didn't enjoy debate too much, but would at least allow a challenge to be made and maybe agree to disagree.
When she was with her nieces (my daughters), there was no holding back her love for surprising them with exaggerated antics that earned her the "favorite auntie" award. She was in her element when she could be silly, loud, and adventurous with them. My girls saw her as fearless, unconcerned about what anyone thought of her. If she were in the mood to dance in a store or in a parking lot during a busy holiday season just to have fun with them, she would go full throttle.
Gin gave so many moments of laughter.
Her flamboyance also provided a mask for the hurts she had endured over her lifetime. Many others would have been crippled by them, but she chose to lift herself and fight for her space in this world despite them. I have nothing but love, admiration, and respect for her because I know how deep, how very deep, those hurts were. They had their impact, and they changed her, but she would not be defeated.
In her later years, she found happiness with her husband Jim Brosnan. They bought their first home in the past year or so. This was so important to her. She wanted so much to have a place that was "theirs,” and she accomplished that. Her vision and determination earned her a place to be at peace, breathe, and rest; a place she could finally call her home.
May God be kind and merciful to her, may perpetual light shine upon her, may her heart be mended, and she see the Glory of God and His love for her.
Love
Monica
