Francis Maguire related the story of how, at the age of 12-15 (1934-1937), he would help my grandfather, William Joseph Dorgan, and James Moriarty build a barn in West Greenwich and then "pouch" corn from a nearby pasture, which they all ate during those Depression Days.

The obituary of Francis P. Maguire:

Francis Paul "Mac" Maguire
Died peacefully on July 23, 2013, in his home surrounded by family. He was born on August 29, 1922, to John and Anne Maguire in Providence, Rhode Island. He served honorably in World War II as part of the greatest generation, landing on Omaha Beach in 1944 with his fellow soldiers in the US Army's 83rd Infantry Division. Following the war, he moved to Indianapolis and married Margaret O'Brien. They were married for forty-six years until she died in 1993. Francis then married Nuala O'Connor, and they celebrated their 18th anniversary on May 13, 2013. He had a 40-year career in the electrical contracting field, proudly carrying his union card for IBEW 481. He also worked as an estimator and eventually retired as vice president of Sanborn Electric Company. He was a devoted member of Saint Mark's Catholic Church. He touched many lives through his generous spirit and active involvement, including hosting prayer groups, singing in the choir, Nocturnal Adoration, Christ Renews His Parish, and Saint Vincent DePaul. Mac could do it all: chef, golfer, mechanic, crossword puzzle expert, voracious reader, and engineer. He is survived by his wife, Nuala; his children, Joseph (Rita) Maguire, James Maguire, and Elaine (Randy) Powers; stepchildren, Emer (Mike) O'Connor-Keller, Cormac (Jen) O'Connor, Cathal (Susie) O'Connor, and Donal (Michelle) O'Connor; twenty grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Saint Mark Catholic Church, 535 E. Edgewood Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46227, on Thursday, July 25, from 3-8 p.m. and Friday, July 26, from 9:30-11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Mark Church on Friday, July 26, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Saint Mark Catholic Church or The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. My Mom, Margaret, grew up in the near-Southside neighborhood of Fountain Square. She was the daughter of Patrick and Bridget O’Brien and the fifth of six children. The O’Brien clan belonged to St. Patrick’s parish, where Mom attended grade school. She was a 1936 high school graduate of St. John’s Academy. Her answer to the question (which is also a favorite St. Patrick’s Day song): Did your Mother come from Ireland, was “Yes, and my Father too.” On this day, 21 years ago, Mom left this earth to hopefully reunite with her family and friends. She had a twinkle in her eye and a beautifully dry sense of humor. She is missed.

Nuala Margaret Madeline Stanley O'Connor Maguire, 84, loved with her entire being. If it was important to you, it mattered to her, and she sought to help you on your path, be it through her insanely expansive network, her belief and support, or her prayers. Dementia claimed her mind, but it never ruled her heart.

She loved good shoes, purses, stylish clothes, and hats. That may have rubbed off on her only daughter. She also loved and valued connection with others, and if you knew her, you understood how important you were to her.

The daughter of an Olympic athlete, Nuala excelled at field hockey, and loved hiking with her beloved Fran and swimming in the ocean when it was so cold that her fur-clad mother watched her from the Irish shore.

During her life in Indianapolis she was active in the St. Mark parish community and sang in the choir. When she moved to Minneapolis in 2016, she was a lector at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Robbinsdale.

Survived by her expansive family who will forever be grateful: her children Cathal (Suzy), Emer (Mike), Dónal (Erin) and Cormac (Jen); their father Séan (Maris); stepchildren Jim (Jane), Elaine (Randy), and Joe (Rita); siblings Colm and Claire; 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. In Hebrew, life is associated with the number 18: these numbers speak of her life.

She is preceded in death by her parents Laurence and Mary Stanley, her siblings Cyril and Joan, her beloved nephew Peter McDonnell, and her dear husband Francis Maguire.

We especially want to thank the Copperfield Hill community, the Memory Care staff and nurses, Twin Cities Physicians, Interim Healthcare Hospice and retired Health Partners LPN Yi Zangh who partnered with us on this path with kindness, compassion, guidance and comfort. You are all angels.

A shiva minyan was held at Beth Jacob Congregation in Mendota Heights, MN, February 12, 2023.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at O'Riley-Branson Funeral Service and Crematory - 6107 South East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227, (beside St. Mark Catholic Church. A Memoiral Gathering at 12:00 noon and service at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment.

Nuala did not grow up during a time when mental illness was treated competently and effectively, and viewed as one aspect of self rather than a defining defect. With that in mind, the family asks that tributes be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and St. Mark Catholic Church (Indianapolis, IN).
